Cockfosters & N Southgate
Synagogue is a long-established community, founded in 1948, and serving the
Jewish population of Southgate, Cockfosters and Hadley Wood - with over 1100
members and covering an area almost 5 miles across.
Our synagogue in Old Farm Avenue, Southgate, is backed up by Minyanim held
regularly in Cockfosters and now also in Hadley Wood.
The community is headed up by Rabbi Yisroel Fine who finds the time to lead
the services in all three locations as well as looking after all the
religious and communal needs.
Unlike most communities in London we have been successful in maintaining the
membership numbers and this is very much due to the enthusiasm and hard work
of all the numerous groups and committees that look after the varied needs
and interests of the community.

The Cockfosters Minyan has been running now for over 30 years and
services are held there every Friday night and Shabbat morning.
The average attendance is 40 to 50 men, 15 to 20 ladies and 6 to 10
children.
The Shacharit service commences at 9am - the same time as Old Farm
Avenue - but the Friday night service normally commences 15 minutes
later than the Old Farm Avenue time [best to check anyway in the
“Times of Service” page on the website to make sure.
The services are always well attended and the decorum is excellent. A
really dedicated group of people ensure that the services are well
davaned, the tunes are sung well and the leining is clear and easy to
follow. But perhaps the nicest thing about the Cockfosters Minyan is
that everyone gets a friendly greeting, plus, if you are a man, you will
probably get an Aliyah. And, of course, there is always a Kiddush at the
end of the service.
The Hadley Wood minyan runs regular services
every Shabbat and every Yom Tov . The services are held in a
friendly atmosphere in a property owned by the Hadley Wood Kehilla.
This was set up by a group of enthusiasts a number of years ago to
meet the needs of those people in the area wanting to go regularly
to a service each Shabbat, but not wishing to walk the 3 miles to
the Shul at Old Farm Avenue.
For a long time the minyan met in the home of one of the leading
lights there, but two years ago a number of participants clubbed
together to purchase a house in Hadley Wood where Shabbat morning
services are now held every week, starting at 9.30am. There are now
over 60 members.
The services are well attended by the local members and the recently
appointed Assistant Rabbi to the Community, Rabbi Wanderer, takes the
services.
At the end of the service there is always a kiddush, and frequently
this will include cholent!
Everybody is welcome - and that includes visitors from outside of
Hadley Wood - you are sure to get a friendly greeting and probably
an Aliyah as well.
